1)Mandarin Lesson Actual Cost
Mandarin Lessons can be categorized into 3 major types, including private classes, group classes at tutorial centres, and classes offered by Mandarin schools. Private teachers and tutorial centres offer more personalized courses, and the tuition fees are consistent, ranging from $150 to $250 and $180 on average. Tuition fees varies depending on the teacher or the centre's reputation, teaching experience, location, and other factors.
On the other hand, the courses offered by Mandarin schools are more expensive, mainly because they provide systematic courses designed for students pursuing further studies, and that these courses are mainly provided by educational, governmental or non-profit-making organizations. Tuition fees shall be paid each academic term, ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 per term. Different Mandarin courses have different charges. Foundation courses (e.g. Putonghua phonics, everyday vocabulary, and conversation) cost around $2,000 to $4,000 per term. As for exam-oriented Mandarin exams, they cost around $4,500 to $6,000 while Mandarin Certificate courses range from $5,000 to $10,000.

Generally speaking, children, students or amateurs tend to prefer one-to-one Mandarin classes, or take part in group classes in small-sized tutorial centres, while working adults usually join courses offered by Mandarin Schools.
Private Mandarin classes and classes offered by tutorial centres usually last around 1-1.5 hours. There is a wide range of courses to choose from, say Putonghua poem reading, phonics, conversation, etc. There are also tutorial classes where students are taught the contents in Chinese textbooks and skills of Chinese writing techniques using Mandarin.
Mandarin schools usually organizes courses by units. Every unit takes around one to two lessons to be taught, and each lesson lasts around 2 to 3 hours. Apart from training students' overall listening, speaking, and reading language skills, they are also concerned about whether students can practically use what they have learnt. The courses cover different exam preparation skills in order to help students attain qualifications. They also focus on communication skills, like business vocabulary and accurate pronunciations.
3)Mandarin Lesson Additional Cost
On top of tuition fees, the major cost of learning Mandarin is the examination fees. The most popular exam in Hong Kong is PSC and the Putonghua Proficiency Test offered by the HKEAA.
There are two modes of assessment by the PSC - $900 for electronic assessment and certificate offered by the PSC; $1,000 for face-to-face assessment and certificate offered by CUHK.
As for the HKEAA Mandarin Proficiency Test, candidates are charged by item - $460 for speaking exam; $230 for listening exam; $230 for translation exam.
Another additional cost comes from purchasing textbooks. Students have to prepare vocabulary and phonics books. If you have classes with private Mandarin tutors at home, charges may rise as well due to higher transportation fees of the teacher.
